March 2025 - a portfolio update and the forward look

Writer: Rupa DattaRupa Datta

As we come to the end of Q1 of 2025, I've managed to refocus myself. March has been a month of a few curveballs however with that, I'm grateful for a bit of routine.

What has happened in my portfolio then and what's coming up?

The day job/contract

I'm about 6.5 months into my 17-month contract, hanging out somewhere between Phase 1 and Phase 2. Last month, I mentioned needing more clarity on what my role would look like in Phase 2. We've talked about it, but I still think it needs more definition. On the bright side, I've been spending more time on-site or working remotely, which I love, so that's a nice change since February. At least I know what's happening in April, and I expect more on-site work.

The extra curricular/freelance

This month, I only did one competition heat with The English-Speaking Union, which aligns with what I mentioned last month. I'm probably taking a break in April and picking it back up in May.

I also got to run a communication workshop for 16-18 year olds at a local high school, helping them think about their future steps. I'm really grateful for this chance and would love to do more of it.

The volunteer part of the portfolio

I've had to cut back on my Toastmasters International activities this month. I've been more of a participant than a contributor, spending time at my local club and attending contests. There's one project I aimed to complete this year that's fallen behind and might not get done on time.

Looking ahead to April, it's going to get busy as we gear up for the District's Annual Business Meeting in May, keeping our governance skills sharp.

In summary:

At the start of this month, I was operating at less than 90% of my usual capacity, which I took as a sign that my body wants me to refocus. I managed to reclaim a lot of time, but my energy didn't quite match up. On the bright side, I'm now zeroing in on refreshed goals and trying to plan 1-3 months ahead. My finances are under control and I'm reviewing them regularly, even though I'm earning less than I have in a while. I'm doing well with creating space, and my summer living plans are looking exciting...let's see what April has in store for us!
